How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?

How long eyelash extensions last typically depends on how you take care of it. The intended lifespan of a medical-grade extension adhesive lasts approximately for four to six weeks. However, usually, the glue weakens even before the natural lash grows out and sheds.

At this point, you may need to wait for two to three weeks more to reapply for your outgrown lashes and thoroughly clean your lash line.

Is It Normal for My Natural Lashes to Fall Off?

You might not notice but your natural lash sheds off every day because it undergoes different phases of the lash cycle.

Lash growth cycles consist of three phases that involve Anagen (active growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting). Throughout these phases, your lashes actively grow and it may even last for 4 to 8 weeks before it completely regenerates.

Why Do My Lash Extensions Only Last a Week?

The longevity of your lash extension depends on a few factors such as the quality of the adhesive used, how your eyelash extension was applied, and how well you take care of them.

For longer-lasting eyelash extensions, continue reading for some of the most effective tips that you can follow.

Can I Apply Eye Makeup with Eyelash Extensions On?

The short answer to this question is of course, yes. However, you should be careful when using such types and brands to avoid further damage and premature lash shedding.

Will My Lash Extension Naturally Fall if I Swim, Take a Shower, or Workout?

While you can do all of these things without your lashes falling off completely, you still need to be extra cautious. Your lashes shouldn't get wet after 24 hours of application and you should wait another 24 hours before exposing them on steam or hot shower.

Tips to Make Your Eyelash Extensions Last Longer

Eyelash extensions require maintenance. And you can't take care of them properly without guidance. Thus, we've compiled some helpful tips on what you can do to make your eyelash extension last longer.

Avoid Water and Steam on the first 48 Hours

As a general rule for eyelash extensions, you should keep your them dry for the first 24 to 48 hours. By doing so, the lash adhesive will have enough time to completely dry and attach to your lash line.

During the first 48 hours, water and steam might reduce the glue's bond. So if possible, try to avoid washing or better yet, avoid water and steam completely on the first 48 hours.

Keep your lashes clean and dry to ensure that your eyelash extensions stay intact. If you must attend a sauna or a hot yoga session, reschedule your visit after a couple of days.

avoid hot water and hot showers

Avoid Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara is still a mascara. And we all know that removing it means that you have to wipe or rub your eyes to remove the eye makeup completely.

Once you have extensions, you are not required to apply mascara. However sometimes, we opt to have more dramatic lashes. Hence if unavoidable, choose makeup products that are not waterproof.

From the term itself, waterproof makeup can resist moisture. Therefore, they will stay in place even when you expose them to water, which also means that you will have a hard time removing them.

Avoid waterproof mascara and eyeliner at all costs if you don't want to damage your new lash extensions.

Use a Lash Sealant

Lash extensions are a personal investment. So investing in a good protective lash sealant is one of the best ways you can do to make your lash extensions last longer. The longevity of your extensions will considerably increased by using a lash sealant in between lash fills.

A lash sealant basically locks in the moisture and oils that are vital for maintaining the strength and health of your lashes. As a result, they are less likely to break or fall out. They may also appear longer and fuller after a few applications.

Sleep on your back

This may seem a little bit too extra but if you are eager to take care of your lash extensions, you may still want to follow this tip.

Lash adhesive has not fully set yet on the first few days of getting your new lashes, which is why you need to be extra careful to prevent them from kinking.

As much as possible, sleep on your back to avoid having your face pushed up against your pillow, which can generate friction and later on cause your eyelash extension to fall off.

Always Use an Oil free Makeup Remover

Makeup removers must be oil-free, glycol-free, and safe for your lashes. Otherwise, the lash glue may weaken and your eyelash extensions may come off too soon.

Oil based cleansers contain ingredients that dissolve and break down the cyanoacrylate bond of your lash extension adhesive - which is why they are not safe to use.

To keep your lashes strong and bonded, always choose an oil free makeup remover to clean your eye area.

avoid hot water and hot showers

Clean and Brush Your Lash Extensions

Part of preserving your lash extensions is cleaning and gently brushing your lashes daily. However, it is important to keep in mind to use only mild cleansers such as a low alkaline soap and an oil free makeup remover to protect both your false lashes and natural lashes from harsh formulas.

Besides cleansing, you also need to brush your eyelashes to remove any buildup of dirt from eye makeup, dead skin cells, and other impurities that may not only damage your lash extension but may also get behind your eye.

Make sure to use a clean mascara wand when removing dirt and unwanted debris. You don't want to just add up to the dirt that might go into your lash line. You may even want to use a lash cleansing brush that is perfectly designed to thoroughly clean the bases of your extensions in all angles, getting in between layers of your natural lashes.

Regular brushing not only keeps your lashes clean but it also separates and lifts the volume of your eyelash extensions and your natural lashes.

Avoid Rubbing or Playing your Lash Extensions

Keeping your hands off your face can be challenging especially if your eyes are itchy. The same is true when you can't get enough of your new eyelash extensions and you just want to feel them.

Although touching won't entirely ruin your new lash extensions, playing with them can. So might as well, resist the urge to rub or even touch them.

Switch to a Silk Pillowcase

Lash extensions can become hooked, snagged, tugged, and warped when sleeping on cotton pillowcases, which can lead to lash breakage, pre-lash shedding, ripped lashes, or worse, bald eyelashes. Unlike silk pillowcases, cotton produces friction every time you twist and turn.

To prevent this from happening, switch to a silk pillowcase to ensure that your lashes won't rub against the tightly woven fabric of silk. Through this, you're also increasing the lifespan of your lashes.

Avoid Heavy Makeup

This is self-explanatory. Using heavy makeup whether just on your eyelids or on your eyelashes will cause rubbing onto your lash line and eye area back and forth. And sometimes, even if you already use an oil free makeup remover, the makeup just won't come off easily.

So if you want to avoid the hassle and you don't want to risk damaging your new eyelash extensions, simply wear less makeup.
